Societal need would be more accurate. And no, that's not really what's happening. What you're mostly seeing happen is affluent people who can insulate themselves from fallout insisting everyone else do the same.
that's an oversimplification, in my estimation.
there are some trust-fundies, athletes, politicians, etc that are in the category you describe, but most of the WFH are lower/middle class who are in information-economy jobs.
