I was talking to my sister yesterday, the VA nurse, and I mentioned that 60% of Americans have co-morbidities.
She pointed out that 60% of Americans have been diagnosed with co-morbidities.
she told me about when she first started nursing, morbidly obese patients would come in and wouldn't have diabetes. Then a doctor explained to her that obese people like that are carrying around so much water, that their blood sugar levels don't show up as diabetic. Not to mention people like my 17 yo niece who was diagnosed with diabetes out of the blue.
And then you think about how many cases of "The Silent Killer" heart disease are out there. I was just sitting there shaking my head and then she hit me with "and think of how many people don't have health insurance for an annual visit to be diagnosed, and the number who would have been diagnosed this year but didn't go to the doctor because of COVID..."
does her perspective align with your understanding undiagnosed co-morbidities? I think that may push the number of excess mortalities high enough to offset the prophylactic things we're marginally attempting...like masks. HK is a generally healthier population with better access to diagnostic health care and a better sense of the risks. I don't know if we're in a position to see any of their gains against COVID or flu.

Utah That's one of the youngest populations in the country. It's a young non-drinking non-smoking healthy population. overall more affluent than much of the other country with lots of healthcare access. They also tested a lot and therefore intervened on cases earlier than places that wait until only the sickest arrive already on the downhill.

Some of the things that we have found that help moderate cases are probably used everywhere. Certain inhaled steroids, recognizing different phenotypes, proning patients, etc.
Protocols on expensive IL-6 inhibitors are probably different. These are typically monoclonal antibodies and each infusion is several thousand dollars. They're not to be used on every patient but even more so I would expect that with the paucity of data out there you find variation and when you use such an expensive tool.
