Hospitalization data flawed in Missouri, perhaps elsewhere

Missouri's health department says the number of hospitalized patients has been underreported since Oct. 17. The note blames the the crash of the portal used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

) — With the number of coronavirus patients requiring hospitalization rising at alarming levels, Missouri and perhaps a handful of other states are unable to post accurate data on COVID-19 dashboards because of a flaw in the federal reporting system.

Since Tuesday, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Service's coronavirus dashboard has posted a message that the total number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 has been underreported since Oct. 17. The note blamed "challenges entering data" to the portal used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for collecting daily hospitalizations around the country.

Without data we are in the dark to coordinating resources. This is time, lives, and money wasted.

More cases make case numbers go up.
More testing makes them go up.
Not equally.
The ratio of positive to negative test are an indicator of how much those things are affecting the cases count.

That ratio is known as the positivity rate. It is going up in many areas. In some areas (certain midwest states) this is the highest of both cases and positivity rates to date. This shows current and estimated future resource needs. It also confirms actual case increases.

Beyond this is hospitalization rates. This is a measure of current resource utilization. This is up in many of the same areas (vulnerable being infected). This is the most concerning. It is a finite resource.

I hope so too, shit took my father. The weed is always good! Works great keeping me sane and my mother happy while she fades away from Alzheimer's. Would be great if they cured that one too. Thanks for asking?
