Not sure how you mistake a human for a deer, but it happens often enough.
That's the only reason I don't think he should have the book thrown at him.
I dont think its terribly common though, its just often reported when it happens, like shark attacks.
It happens roughly 1000 times a year, although many times it's likely line-of-site mistakes where the other hunter was hit by a bullet intended for a deer.
The "I thought he was a deer" is always puzzling to me.
But when many of these hunting days start out with Busch Lights in the deer blind about an hour before dawn, I guess we shouldn't be too surprised when a hunter fires a slug into a bush that he saw shaking.
Regardless of how it happened, the father has to live with it the rest of his life.

And they’re little bastards. I only see them on occasion, but there is one cave I go into every year and there is almost always on in there (not too far in away from the entrance).
Anytime I get this close I always send a pic to my hunter buddies saying "why do you have such a hard time finding these guys?"

When I was a kid we lived in a neighborhood that backed up to a swamp separated by a levee. Well, that levee did a good job of stopping water but apparently not alligators... Somehow one got into our neighbors backyard and they had to call animal control to get it out.
