It's been used in everyday situations since long before the whole gender identity fad.

While you're on the phone, someone knocks on your door. You know it's one person but don't know the person's gender. You say to the person on the phone, "Hold on let me see who it is and what they want."

I think this unknown gender/unfamiliar person use of the word "they" for a single individual is where the Gen Z gender labels originate.

Many high-ranking officials - members of the cabinet of ministers and heads of large state-owned companies - were not ready for Vladimir Putin's decision to start a war in Ukraine. Looks like sanctions are a trillion dollar hit and growing.
Russia GDP is 1.5 trillion. It'll take years for them to be in full effect.
So maybe Russia loses 1/3 of it's economy for three years. Let's say it cost them that for five.

They aren't giving up Ukraine for that.
I think we would have to wait for the unpredictability to then disrupt outside investment for a harder hit.

I think the hits on the oligarchs and Putin are the piece that will have the fastest action currently. You're a billionaire Russian, but now you can't use your wealth outside of Russia. That might be okay for some but for most of these guys they are jet setting and enjoying the West that they vocalize against. I'm not sure much of Russia has the culture of enjoying a penthouse in London or New York well you can get some of the world's best restaurants etc. If you can't go to Monaco with your yacht, that's now seized? What's the money worth? If you lose the lifestyle it brings you.

I'm basically stuck off to one side of the crowd around the table, watching the die fall and hoping for the game to end early and cleanly.
