My understanding regarding the email is that the emails were sent from the IP of the Green Beret suspect's account and that the FBI is saying that it was him who sent them, but they haven't looked into whether or not any of the historical content is accurate.
The account information used and IP addresses and locations are easy to find in any email. That is just how email was made to work.
I'm not sure how they would determine the emails were sent by him even if they were sent from an IP address associated with one or more of his devices unless they also have video of him using those devices at the time of the emails being sent. Even then, it doesn't mean his accounts/devices were not hacked. Though, I don't think that was the case. My money is on it being him who sent them.
With regard to verifying the content, I don't know exactly how that information would be stored or accessed at the federal level. However, he refers to events that occurred overseas which means the military, the CIA, and/or the other three letter agencies that with or oversee them such as the DoD. Given that, the CIA and FBI haven't had the best relationship over time. It wouldn't really surprise me if the FBI hasn't been given clearance for that level of information. Even if they eventually are given that, it will most likely be redacted.
So the FBI is simply saying the emails are real and were sent by the suspect, but the contents may or may not be fake which is not that interesting.
The PBD podcast released a short saying basically this. However, they also said the content was fake and Shawn Ryan released an apology/retraction stating as such. The only things I can find that Ryan has released state the opposite of that aka "Look. I was right." type of thing. I'm not sure PBD is getting its information.
