Book 2 of the farseer trilogy: royal assassin

7.8 of 10

This series isn't as good the second time thru. Itd make a good tv show tho since the fantasy elements are even less than game of thrones

Per barnes and noble:

"Fitz has survived his first hazardous mission as king’s assassin, but is left little more than a cripple. Battered and bitter, he vows to abandon his oath to King Shrewd, remaining in the distant mountains. But love and events of terrible urgency draw him back to the court at Buckkeep, and into the deadly intrigues of the royal family.

Renewing their vicious attacks on the coast, the Red-Ship Raiders leave burned-out villages and demented victims in their wake. The kingdom is also under assault from within, as treachery threatens the throne of the ailing king. In this time of great danger, the fate of the kingdom may rest in Fitz’s hands—and his role in its salvation may require the ultimate sacrifice"

Thoughts on this one?
This one fell short compared to his highly praised debut novel Ready Player One. It felt rushed, not the finesse and the quirky 80's references but full of unbelievable turn of events, character development wise. I'd give it a 3/10. But my expectations may have been too high.

Comics: Savage Dragon, Invincible, Tech Jacket, Descender, Tooth and Claw: The Autumnlands, Saga

Books: The Farseer Trilogy....just about to finish the final book. Then will read The Stand by Stephen King.
How'd u like farseer? I just finished book 1 as a reread a couple weeks ago. ending was strange (no spoilers) but generally speaking, I really like the journey the first time. it was cool as a reread but didn't enjoy it more the second time around like I do with most good books

Whoops just realized this is from page 1 lol. Question still works tho. did u like farseer trilogy?

Midway thru harry potter book 2, gardens of the moon and first law on rereads, and the name of the wind for the first time. name of the wind is sickkkkk so far. 100 pages in. another badass character to add to the likes of drizzt, kaladin, logan 9 fingers, aragorn, etc... I don't know what to call him yet tho since he has dozens of names.

The Combat Codes fuses thrilling mixed martial arts action into an immersive sci-fi world. A must-read for any fan of unarmed combat.

Murray Pearson is sick of buying broken kids from the slave Circles. He’s sick of training them to become skilled combatants, only to watch them break again. He’s sick of reporting his failures as a talent scout to men who don’t have the guts to stand in the Circles themselves.

Cego doesn’t understand why he’s fighting. He doesn't understand the grueling training sessions he's forced to endure every day. He doesn’t understand why they scream for blood when he steps into the Circle. The one thing Cego does understand is hand-to-hand combat. He was born to fight.

Cego is sent down an unlikely path at Murray’s side, paved with fierce competition at the world’s most prestigious combat school along with the answers to his own mysterious past.

The Blade Itself (Book 1 of the First Law Trilogy) by Joe Abercrombie

unique style outside the norms of high-fantasy. instead of world building through the farm boy method, you get immersed right away in a coupe different storylines. but unlike gardens of the moon, it is very easy to follow if you are patient and let the story come to you

- human based (no elves, dwarves, orcs, etc), but there is 1 humanoid orc-like creature called shanka, or flatheads
- a handful of mages, but not the LoTR hat-wearing type wizards
- political scheming
- some action
- dark/sarcastic humor
- Logen Motherf%ckin 9 Fingers
- its a unique book, bc its almost as if not much happens, yet its very entertaining somehow
- definitely not a stand-alone. fun read, but the payoffs will come in books 2 and 3

i did this as a "re-read" via audible since my B&N didnt have the books when i wanted to start them. there are pros and cons to the narration:
- pros: Steven Pacey has alot of different voices for the characters. feels almost like a movie
- cons: constantly changing from whispering to yelling. since i live in apartments, its frustrating bc I will raise the volume to hear the low parts and then he screams and i fear the neighbors will wake up

Does it read like the Shattered Sea trilogy? Because I found Abercrombie's writing in that series to be not very interesting...

not sure. ive only done the first law trilogy by him. i just researched it a little and it looks like shattered sea is a young adult series. so my guess is that it has a different feel.

i considered the tone of this book "gnarly" as opposed to intense or dark. but thats because im simulatenously re-reading "gardens of the moon" which is pretty dark in comparison. i saw some other people review "the blade itself' online and they consider it more intense than i do

i felt like it was pretty casual. it has gorey moment in fights, torturing etc. but those happen pretty fast and then its back to normal. and by normal, the world feels like a grey. its definitely not a green rosey world of the shire, but it also doesnt feel like Mordor. even tho this is not the case, it feels like a world would be AFTER regional kings battle and there are dead lying around every, and everyone moping

but despite having that grey feel, abercrombie layers in dark comedy. its a very unusual high fantasy book, but its kinda of cool. they characters arent grey like game of thrones with obvious good and bad sides to most of them. they are decent good guys, that out of nowhere say or do somethign very controversial. and as a reader ur like, wait wtf. this is the good guy LOL

im not sure if B17 @B17 is still around, but i feel like he has read almost every fantasy book out there

canofsticks @canofsticks i decided to start a youtube channel for book reviews since i like making videos. prolly not worht watching bc i used the stuff i said to u as an outline to what i put into this video. the main difference tho, is that i reranked it from "great" to "fun"

my ranking system is for "good" books worth readying, but think of "fun" as being on the lower side. like 7.5/8 of 10. the reason i initially called it "great" in the post above was because i was thinking more of the story as a whole. not much happens in this book, but it is an easy read and the characters are cool. but it really doesnt pay off until books 2 and three, which were "great" if i remember correctly (only audiobooked this series one time so far except for this first book)

i threw on "half a king" last night but passed out. so ill come back in a day or so and let u know how it feels compared to "the blade itself"

Legit would watch all your reviews on fantasy books! That actually made me more excited to read The Blade Itself, whereas before I was skeptical because The Shattered Sea trilogy was kinda meh, to me.

Good job man! Keep it up, I look forward to watching!

Well they're not board games, per say. There's no board. Just dice. You all create your characters, then play out a scenario read aloud by whoever is running the game.
Best way to explain it is for u to just watch a play through, like this great series

how does the book feel? i had to do it by audible since barnes brick and mortar didnt have the books and i didnt want to wait. i listened to the beginning of a couple reviews earlier befor ei did mine and this one dude was going off about how nice the book cover feels. i was laughing at him... even tho i get it. is it nice and soft?
