They desperately need "title fights" for upcoming PPV events, because Conor's out 10 months, DC is hurt, Jones is suspended, Ronda's done, Amanda & Cody wont fight for another 4-6 months, Woodley & Mighty Mouse don't draw well, etc, etc. Timing & luck for WME-IMG is brutal.

So if it's signed and Aldo wins then he is a 2 division 2 belt champion, Dana isn't gonna allow that to happen, fight won't happen

I dont blame tony for wanting more money. How many other top fights does the UFC have right now? Not as much as they did a couple of years ago

This is the dumbest fucking thing I've heard today..... They are REALLY devaluing their brand.... They are actually creating paper champs. I joked before that in 2017 everyone would be fighting for a interim title... I didn't think it would actually be the case.

i feel like every division has either been destroyed by a chamion or its just being stifled by management and its champion.

Good point, they just gifted it to him when they took it from Conor. I would have had him fight Max Holloway for it.
He never won it the first time either. He was given it when he came over from the WEC.

Granted he defended it a few times after that (about 1-2x a year because he pulls out a lot), but he technically never won a ufc belt once.

That's right, he was grandfathered the UFC title. He proved he deserved it, but yeah, a bit of a pull-out merchant.

All things put aside, who do you guys think would take this?

I'm edging towards Aldo, I doubt Khabib will be able to get a hold of him and Aldo will more than likely light him up for 25 mins. As good as Khabib's wrestling is his takedowns aren't great while Aldo probably has the best TD defence in the ufc.

Everyone here knows I love Aldo, but this fight would scare me for sure. Aldo has fought and stuffed some of the best wrestlers in the game. His tdd is truly second to none, but the size is just there for kabib.

Aldo could come in and use his solid jab and 1-2 to maintain distance. He could also try to use some low kicks to hamper kabibs lead leg, but will he use his low kicks is the real question.

Aldo doesn't throw much leg kicks anymore because he has fought almost exclusively powerhouse wrestlers. Kabib is a giant grappler as well. I could see Aldo stuffing quite a few td, but can he keep it up? Can he evade the td throughout the fight? If he doesn't, I could see him getting worn down up against the fence by kabib.

I feel that Aldo's cardio issues have been exaggerated, but that isn't to say he won't get tired if pressed by a much bigger man.

This fight, though I'd hate the circumstances, is intriguing for sure. I could see Aldo touching kabib up the way he did Edgar for 25 min, but I could also see kabib eating some shots early to press Aldo up against the fence, wearing him down for the later rounds.

Still gotta go with Aldo. He displayed a lot of mental fortitude to come back the way he did against Edgar, someone who was on a real streak.

Good insight.

Size could play a big part in this as you say, I'm pretty sure Khabib walks around at 190, probably around 20 lbs heavier than Aldo and he also has a 3 inch height advantage. Regardless of how good Aldo's gas tank is if Khabib gets a hold of him early it could be a real long night for Jose.

Aldo is a very smart fighter and won't make any unnecessary risks if they do fight, the Edgar fight for me personally was one of the most perfect performances I've seen.

Interesting fight, if Aldo's cardio is good then I'd pick him all day. If not and he slows down around the 3rd then Khabib would have to try to grind him down until then. If it's a 3 round fight I choose Aldo, 5 round I'd lean towards Khabib.

We've seen many times with Aldo in the past when he gets tired he just gets owned by fighters, if that happened against Khabib I don't think he'd last. I do believe that Aldo has made huge strides with his cardio and if he won't have to cut down to 145 then he will be even better.

Styles make fights so I would go with Aldo, I would choose Khabib over McGregor though due solely on the ability to stuff the takedown.

I tend to agree with you, but it could also be a case of WME-UFC trying to force Conor's hand a little. i.e. give him a reason to want to come back other than the lure of making more money. If there's any truth to the rumor.

I listened to this entire podcast, and all JRE's for that matter, and the source for everything Joe says is clearly Dana. Dana may be a lot of things, but he's smart enough to know that anything he tells Joe will likely end up being broadcast to millions of listeners, then reposted on every MMA board and news site the day after. For whatever reason, Joe's more skeptical when it comes to subjects like official age of the sphinx than he is the information fed to him by UFC higher ups. A month or so back I posted that article that was floating around about Fedor fighting Mitrione on his board during a live podcast, before the fight was officially announced. Jamie brings it up on air, and Joe quickly dismisses it saying his "inside source" told him that fight is 100% not happening. We all know what happened next.

I love this fight and also love the idea of either fighting Conor.

Is Kabib that big? I thought he was an average sized LW but maybe I'm wrong. Haven't watched many of his fights.

He gets pretty thick outside of camp. I recall Cormier saying he walks around up to 200 lbs at times.

Biggest head in lightweight history. Frankie Edgar for scale...
