Imo we still don't know enough. As was mentioned before, could be mental illness, could have been physical illness causing mental illness. Could be he was a good mark for pinning blame - was found already passed, movements were probably predictable/routine, background check possibly including father's history probably widely available in LV considering the amount of money involved/size of comped suite.
This one definitely doesn't add up without more information than we have/than has been released. It's sad that his family and the victims may never have the full real story.
I hope everyone is able to find some kind of peace after this, but it's going to be trying times for a while. I hope his mother has been kept from as many details as possible.

he would've had to, to modify a gun to fully automatic isn't cheap or easy. I've never been in the market for one, but I can't imagine they are all that easy to get your hands on, either

It's both incredibly cheap and easy. 40 bucks or so.
Edit- looks like atf started knocking out drop in auto sears.
So now it's the whole group needed and maybe an 80% part.
150 bucks and an hour instead of 40 bucks and one minute.

Just buying a fully auto or the mods to make a weapon fully auto takes a lot of planning and research. You can’t just buy one at Academy sports. People are talking about the fully auto, but I think someone with a semi-auto and good optic would have had a higher body count. Maybe not as many injured, but definitely more deaths. People literally ducked down as he rained down rounds. A good shooter with a semi-auto would have been dropping people like flies in this scenario.

I've mostly only dealt with pistols myself, but to modify to fully auto requires a different trigger, hammer, sear, disconnector, bolt carrier, correct?

Sounds right. But it's super simple conversion in the ar15.
If you're already running an m16 bolt like I am, you're looking at probably 150 bucks of stuff.

Historically it simply hasn't been.
As a multiple gun owner and fairly loose gun rights kind of guy, I don't care if they ban these associated sales. They clearly exist to make a legal weapon illegal.
