Personally, I think it's the government's responsibility to be paying people. In this case (as with most) they're quick to swing their hammer around, but slow to think of the consequences, so if businesses are willing and able to pick up the tab, good on them. Draws in to question whether the loving government or heartless business owners are the ones that care about people though, doesn't it?

Yea I don't totally get her situation. She works at a State hospital/facility, is funded federally, but works for a lab. Maybe @Splinty can explain how that works, I'm not a Dr or scientist.

Yeah, at the moment we've barely had much community spread so far, with only 2 confirmed cases in Melbourne (obviously higher than the numbers show, but our testing is middle of the road - nowhere near as good as South Korea but much better than the US). And that's being reported as good news. The thing is though, it's been 80+ degrees Fahrenheit for 6 out of the last 8 days, so we're still in the last gasps of summer. It's (very limited) evidence that predictions of a summer respite are accurate.

I'm hoping for an as yet unpredicted 'Mr Burns' effect, whereby we suddenly get simultaneously exposed to every disease known to man, they cancel each other out and we become indestructible.

We are further back than some places, ahead of others. We're probably further than most would have been at the same stage of community transmission, so that's not really the problem. It's what's coming that's going to fuck us harder than elsewhere.

The thing is, what's true of Covid is generally true of seasonal flu. In theory, if you implement measures to keep Covid down, it should also keep the seasonal flu down. Also, are you guys like Canada where you your population is reasonaly spread out as oppose to stacked on top of each other like Europe?

Yeah, it's not like he's a big fan of Fox, but he got to a point where he was like "CNN isn't even delivering relevant news, it's just Trump gossip"

I'm not a fan of Fox either, but CNN is like watching an episode of The View.
