Prophecy tells of a world ruler who sits on a throne right fuckin there. Now they are finally taking it. Of course this is an absurdly over-simplified summary, there is much more to this story...

Good observation. It is true that talks about a Jewish homeland began at the beginning of the 20th century. I believe that support for that idea stalled however and gained support back only after the horrible events of WWII regarding the concentration camps. WWII was the necessary catalyst for the creation of Israel, and that is why the WWII gets credited for it. One could argue that the Balfour declaration would be nothing but an idea if it wasn't for WWII and the Holocaust. And then the UN made it so.
