what’s this? Baby tree?

I have 4 oak trees in my yard. I like oaks, so that’s cool. But the amount of acorns that come down in the fall is a pain in the ass. When they all shed it’s like trying to walk on marbles in my yard lol. I try to rake up most of them, but it’s quite a task to get them all.

anyway, I have a ton of baby red oaks popping up around my yard right now.

No clue.

It looked like an ugly tree that was too close to the house so I ripped it out. Then this thing popped up.

Now I feel bad for ripping it out. Haha.

meh, I wouldn’t feel bad.

there’s a lot of trees out there. I’ve literally killed at least a 50 oaks that sprouted up from the acorns I didn’t get with the rake. I just hit them when I mow.

Maybe I should start a tree farm lol

I have a few red oaks. A few white oaks. Most are maples and sycamores.

And 3 locusts I can't wait to murder.

Are people allowed to shoot big cats in Florida? Not saying they should, but is it allowed? I’m not sure how that works here either. State protected maybe?

if I was those hunters, I would have at least had my rifle aimed at them. You know, just in case!

Scary to be that close to a couple of pissed off cats, but at the same time awesome to witness that from a front row seat!

Florida panthers are highly protected because they're our state animal and because the Florida population is endangered.

Though they are technically not distinct enough from the mountain lions in the western states (mountain lions from Texas were actually brought here to diversify the gene pool in the 90s), they're the only members of the Felis concolor species on the east coast, and shooting them is a felony.

Fortunately they're few in number and only really inhabit the parts of the Everglades where no humans live.

Ah, didn’t know they were the state animal. I need to look up what the status is in Tx. The state protects some additional species that are not protected at the federal or ESA level.

I’ll see if I can find it, but not long ago there was a story in the news about a guy that shot a big mountain lion somewhere in south Texas. I don’t remember the article having any negative connotations, so I assumed that was legal here? It was almost like”cool! Look at the big cat this guy shot!” Lol

It's funny how the exact same animal can evoke different reactions based on the location, but it makes sense. There was such a heavy push to "save the Panther" here in the 80s that anyone caught shooting one would not be received well by the local community. It would be so wrong that I honestly don't see it happening with a Florida hunter.

A quick Google search shows me a story of a guy who killed one in Georgia and was given 2 years probation, during which time he was banned from hunting anything.

Georgia man sentenced to 2 years probation for killing Florida panther

I'd heard about them roaming up to central FL but I had no idea they'd been as far as Georgia. lueVelvet @lueVelvet any stories of panthers in your area?

This guy was attacked recently but only suffered scratches. Only the second known attack of a human by a panther. I imagine it was a smaller panther but also the guy is from Florida and we don't take any shit.

Definitely would've killed a northern pussy like Hauler @Hauler

Here's a couple recent ones I found with a quick google:

150 lbs. mountain lion shot near Tuscola

143-pound mountain lion shot near Freer

Looks like both of these guys actually reported the kill to Texas Parks and Wildlife for their records

I've heard of one near Christmas Florida on the Orlando Wetlands property but it was just anecdotal and nothing 100% confirmed. We generally don't have too many of these over by us (East Orlando near UCF) but I've seen wild cats near Lake Apopka while cycling a few months back.

Fake tough guy. None of the blood is wiped. Trying to look as tough as possible. Probably a tiny scratch.

Today is probably one of the most beautiful spring days I can remember. Great weather.

The only problem is, I think that I'm really getting withdrawal symptoms from the missing brake-dust in the air in the city :)

TGO COVID-19 edition
well, at least it was bright and sunny with blue skies. It was gray and raining here. However, I did get to take the kid out to stomp in some puddles and play in the mud. So I guess that’s kind of cool.

I’m very easily entertained at this time with the COVID sheltering. I also seeded my yard about 10 days ago, which was well timed as we’ve been getting alternating days of sun and rain. I was crawling around on my hands an knees to see if I have any new grass yet lol. That’s where I’m at mentally - I’m literally trying to watch grass grow for excitement.
