Foil and toss in the grill low and slow. Remove when caramelized and add butter, lime and salt. Even Mutant @Mutant couldn't complain!

I throw them on the grill whole right from the garden with dirt on them, then I cook em hard and peel the outer layer and the insides are perfect. I love em even without any salt or butter, although they are certainly more amazing with spices and butter.

I also let one or two big onions get a real nice browning/black in spots on the grill when we can a huge batch of garden salsa. The black parts make the salsa look super authentic(it is) and the flavors from any
Maillard reaction can only improve any food IMO.

I have thrown almost everything on the grill with zero foil or pan to test out primitive cooking, I just like to try everything out on the most simple level of cooking.
