A flu bug?

A flu bug is only half as contagious as COVID-19.
A flu bug has a vaccine, and treatments.
A flu bug doesn't have this high of a fatality rate even though it infects more people.

If this outbreak reaches influenza levels it will be as clear as day, the two are not even in the same league.
We'll see.
The mortality rates aren't accurate as we have no idea how many people have actually had it.

When the suggestion if you get it is just wait it out at home and it will pass, yeah - it's a flu bug. It's not a death sentence.

I agree. What I am saying is that downplaying it by comparison is a mistake. We can make it less worse than the flu, by seeing it as potentially worse than the flu.

I don't mean to downplay it. I know containing the spread is important. But with the rest of the nation running around with their fucking hair on fire acting like this is the end of times I can't help but downplay it.

Tell me how I'm wrong.

It's 50% min more contagious than the flu travelling round a population with no herd immunity or proper treatment. It might only have a fatality rate of 0.6% to 1%, but when it has the potential to infect millions then that's alot of deaths. Death rate will increase if health systems are overwhelmed causing patients that could be saved to die through lack of beds or ventilators. How we handle the spread will determine how many people die.

Because in our lifetime we haven't seen anything spread as quickly as this. And we can bring AIDS in the discussion and all the other contagious afflictions, we can't deny the damage it's already has done. The unknowns about this virus should not be cause for panic, but definitely cause for action.

People freak out because the media was to loud, and the government was to quiet.

I agree with all that.

But the media having everyone in a tizzy about this is likely what is overwhelming healthcare facilities.

If you get it, bunker down and it will pass. Stay away from old people. Hundreds of thousands of people running to hospitals causes more harm than good, and it's usually completely unnecessary.

That's not accounting for the fact people are most infectious when not showing symptoms early and many don't show symptoms or are very small. Leads them to become super spreaders. 80% of South Korea's cases can be traced back to one patient, patient 31.
