I know it sucks to think about but if you have pipes above rooms with valuables or in walls next to valuables/irreplaceable items consider a plan of action...aka moving some of those items

if/when pipes burst then electrical gets sketchy and if/when water is a flowing then it will be much harder to protect said items

Just something to consider...I hope your pipes hold up of course

I don't think a lot of texans realize how fucked it will be when it thaws...there is only so many plumbers and repair people available

The pipes are all below the house. Yeah, if they go we are gonna have trouble. Our entire neighborhood is frozen. I expect dozens if not hundreds needing plumbers.

hundreds of thousands maybe...not sure how many people live in those areas

I might be exaggerating but it will be months and months of work

just get the water main off before the pipes think about thawing...sounds like you will only have wall/floor potential issues, this ceiling stuff is just horrible...I expect water heaters to fall into rooms below for some folks, and tons of other wacky stuff

just get the water main off before the pipes think about thawing... when you think everything is thawed out and want to slowly test your lines maybe keep somebody watching the water meter as you open up the water supply again...if there is water going thru that meter but you aren't drawing it inside thru a faucet, hose valve, toilet, etc., then you know it is going somewhere you don't want it

When I shut off my water to work on something I also turn off my hot water heater, if for some reason the water heater is empty it can damage itself if still trying to heat water...better safe than sorry, it is probably frozen solid right now...I have never seen how a water heater reacts to being frozen solid(@Lars R. Biden you ever seen this?)

Generators are very handy. One of those things that cost a lot, but when you need them you really need them. The Generac would be awesome, but i think they are between 8-10k. I can’t come close to justifying that much money for no more often than i need one. I would certainly recommend taking the plunge and buying a small one to keep around in case of emergencies like this.

Unfortunately for me, my generator needs a new carburetor. If i lose power and need to get it started i will have to hope i can rob one off of one of my mowers.

2k to keep the fridges and some sockets going. Could put the water heaters on it too.


Probably another 2k to install that size pee Google

that is the thing with a generator. its one of those things you buy and then its in the way for years on end but hen you need it it is as good as gold. even a 2k camping generator will save your ass in an emergency

This shit is really getting crazy. I can’t imagine how many people are gonna have busted water pipes and lots of water damage. As someone said, the water can come out real fast when a pipe breaks. I’ve had hairline cracks where the water sprays like a mist and pipes bust completely and it gushes like a hydrant. I don’t know if this is good advice or not, but in the past if i thought they were gonna bust i have shut the water off at the main that way when I’m ready to come back i can have someone turn it on while i walk through the house and listen for the inevitable.

Yep, better to have it and not use it much than to not have it and regret
I have two small hondas that can link together

enough to keep the house warmed up via space heaters and also to alternate fridge/freezer to keep them right...I have propane stoves/firewood to do out door cooking and water boiling if needed

4 million people without electricity. Let's say that 75% are on electric heat. That's 3 million people with frozen pipes.
Even 10% is 300,000 floods starting over the next 24 hours as Central Texas starts to peek over the freezing temp
