Lukewarm Carl @Willthiswork I thunk you’re the only one I know that has tried this bottle....the fancy whiskey bar here has Van Winkle Family Reserve 12-year Lot B. That’s been in my wish list for a long time. $50/shot
It's good but I'm cheap. If you're lucky enough to get a chance to buy it here, that's basically what a bottle of that costs here. So I have a hard time splurging for one drink.

That's not to say that I wouldn't... But it would be hard.

Pretty much the same with me. I have a hard time splurging for one drink like that. But....that’s one I’ve been wanting to try for years. I’ve never seen it anywhere, not even the big whiskey bars at home. I’m surprised the bottle doesn’t cost more, I assumed it would be more expensive.

maybe I’ll get my wife to buy a shot for me at my birthday dinner ?. That way I don’t have to feel guilty about it hah

So, I’m out to a nice restaurant where we’re at on our spring break vacation. Noticed they have Pappy 15 and Old Rip VW on their shelf. But they want $85 and $50 per shot, respectively.

For crying out loud...for what I’m about to pay for this dinner I’m not sure I can drink as I want lol
No way I'm spending that much for a shot.
I don't give a fuck what it is.

Business associate gave me a bottle of Western Reserve 8 year. Cool bottle.

I've never heard of this one. Says it was distilled in Ohio, so I guess fuck you Kentucky.

Just tried it. Very smooth.

Buddy recently gave me a bottle for my 40th. We tucked into during the Macgregor/Poirier fight. Good shit, will turn turn your pubic hairs into strawline jaggers!

Giving Elijah craig small batch the ol' college try.
It's pretty good but not sure it's worth the $50 price tag

I like EC just fine and think it is quality whiskey, but I don’t buy it all that frequently. Not that I disagree with you about the price point, but $50 is becoming pretty common for that tier of bottle. I’d have to look, but I think that bottle is around $35-40 here.

enjoy it buddy!

I had a sip of Russell’s 10yr earlier (the white label one). That’s a hard bottle to beat at it’s price. I think that’s one you’ve posted in here before

You know after my second pour I find myself enjoying it a lot more.

Looks nice

I saw a guy buy a 2000 dollar bottle of something like that a few weeks ago, he actually bought two like it was nothing...might have been a blantons variety
Blanton's is truly outstanding bourbon and really isn't terribly expensive BUT, I've been told (by Grateful Dude @Grateful Dude ) that because they basically only pour it once a year, places will often price gouge on the few bottles they can get.

This guy special orders them...he is super rich obviously

I talked to the liquor store clerk after he left because I was blown away that a guy spent 3-4K for two bottles

I'm not at all hopeful, but I'm hoping to hit up the same store this weekend and see if they still have any bottles left. Got time for the story of how I got this bottle? Sure you do.

So I saw on the provincial liquor board site, that some stores had gotten Blanton's in, none of them particularly close to me but sometimes they'll do store to store transfers. So into the local store I walk and ask "Can you order something in for me from another store?" "Probably, what are you looking for?" Me: "Blanton's bourbon" At this point they start laughing at me, which doesn't strike me as a good sign. But they tell me a store about 20 minutes away has 8 bottles and offer to call to try to get one put on hold for me. They immediately pick up the phone and start asking about the 8 bottles of Blanton's they have, by this point that number was already 7, but they offer to put one on hold for me. Into my truck I get and 20 minutes or so later into the liquor store I go to pick up my bottle. I was actually told by the nice woman who was helping me "We've actually been told we aren't supposed to put this on hold for anyone." So I definitely happened to get some people in a good mood that day.

That’s exactly how the bourbon magic happens ?

right place, right time pays off sometimes!

I know they have a hard "Limit 2 per customer" rule. Knowing they had others made me want to inquire about a second bottle when I went to pick up my first, but I didn't want to push my luck. I'm also not a hoarder by any stretch, but I am a firm believer in "2 is 1, 1 is none."

The dirty secret is that they are literally sitting on warehouses of this shit. They just control how much they release because of the allure it has now with consumers. Keeps it “special”. But they could release a lot more and stock stores way more than they do...if they wanted to. They’ve played the hype game, and it’s worked for them.

Hard to find, yes. But not absent. like some listed endangered species, it’s not actually as rare as it seems ?

I just looked at images and I think it might have been Macallan 25 year single malt scotch or something

bottle looked kinda like this
View attachment 31335
That’s a nice bottle, and I’m sure it’s tasty. MSRP on that is probably like $1500, but who knows what the stores actually charge

7 years ago, when my business partner and I started our company, we pooled our money and bought a bottle of Macallan 18 (think it was like $300ish) and we stowed it away. We had one big contract that got us going as a new company, but it was for the state so it took forever to get paid. We finally got our first big invoice paid about 6 months into our existence, which was about 4 months worth of us two putting in 60 hour weeks. We cracked the bottle the day that check came in and we celebrated that we had made it ?

Same thing they do with eagle rare. Create the illusion of a shortage and charge a higher rate. Eagle rare is made by buffalo trace and for almost twice the value and the pain in the ass of purchasing it, I'd rather just save myself $30 and buy buffalo trace.
