NSFW Officer shoots and kills unarmed victim

It's amazing how people overlook facts when feelings get involved. I doubt those officers went to work that morning with the intention of taking someones life. As
@Guy Smalley pointed out, of the three individuals that were approached by the officers only the one who acted squirrelly got shot. Maybe there is a better way of policing dangerous areas where criminals don't value human life. As a kid I saw a guys get brained with an ax handle because he fouled someone hard during a basketball game. Thats a foul, a little shit talking, 15 minutes later DEAD. I also saw someone get shot over $5 during a dice game. Thats 5 dollars, a little shit talking, DEAD. Maybe where you grew up the criminals were a little more emotionally stable, and were willing to talk out their problems. Not in the hood. If a guy is willing to murder you for your Jordans, what do you think he's willing to do to a person whose job it is to arrest him for a crime? If you have the answers let's hear it.
1. Decriminalizing weed, I'm all for it. So are most cops that I know. Most cops wont even arrest you for minor possession. They'll throw away your weed & tell you to beat it. That being said, in most parts of the country its still a crime to possess illegal drugs. If you want to make it legal change the law. I know a nation full of cops that would welcome the prospect of not getting shot in the face, while trying to write a speeding ticket, because the driver has a joint in his/her pocket.
2. Better training/ education for Law Enforcement. Again, I'm all for it. So are most police officers. Who's going to pay for it? The average patrol officer makes less than 50 grand a year. Getting the position, on average, requires an associate's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience (usually military). Are you willing to risk your life every day for $50,000?
If you can do a better job of keeping your community/city/nation safe, like Pheonix Jones does here then go out and do it. If not...

Part of the issue is we need to look at who actually wants to be a cop. And why are cops so quick to resort to violence.

I want to get this straight. I don't believe the cop is a bad person, but he either fucked up here, or whatever process lead to this being considered the correct response is wrong. There is without a doubt a much larger issue/s, which have caused this 'Us or them' mentality that US cops have, but situations like this only make it worse. If you want to be a policeman that doesn't fear for his life in a large number of situations, things have to change. While a lot of those changes are out of your hands, there are a few that aren't. If we go onto the other problems, then I think expanding welfare in America and increasing the standard of living for the poorest people will go a long way towards improving many of your societal ills. Currently there is a significant proportion of Americans that live under the poverty line, and they feel, perceived or real, like that there is no alternatives to getting ahead, but a life of crime. Changing that will be a monumental task, but will pay massive dividends to police, and everyone who interacts with them.

Usually the people that want to be cops are people that want to serve their communities. A high percentage see it as a continuation of the oath they took when they joined the military. Some are carrying on a family tradition, some just want a government job with benefits. Unlike what most people think, for most, its not a power trip. In my case, I was a young combat vet who saw crime destroying my neighborhood. I wanted my kids to be able to play on my street without worrying about some knucklehead shooting up the place. I stepped up.
Because criminals are prone to resort to violence, and police officers would rather not die while enforcing the law.

That doesn't mean the police officers that go rogue should have the blue wall of defense.
The internal investigations should be handled by proper authorities, i.e. third parties that don't have a dog in the race. Fairness and impartial findings should be much more prevalent than they currently are due to investigations and prosecutions being handled internally.
Again, it's well and good that cops don't want to die for their jobs. Don't sign up to be one if you aren't willing to die for it. Cops aren't Judge Dredd.
This shit keeps up and you're going to find a lot more Christopher Dorners, Marvin Banks', Joanie Calloways, and the like. P.O.'s can only get away with murder for so long before they're going to start being murdered back... and in greater numbers than ever before.
If you don't have a better solution, then we're wasting time discussing it. The fact that you would've responded differently in that situation is irrelevant. You were not in that particular situation of having to make a split second life & death decision. Risk your life so others can safely walk down the street at night, go to a movie, send their little kids to school without some maniac murdering them for kicks, or because they forgot to take their meds. I use a computer simulator to run civilians through shoot/ no shoot simulations all the time. They are usually amazed at how fast these altercations can deteriorate. At about a 95% rate they're either killed or end up killing an innocent bystander. Most police agencies have civilian outreach programs that gives the community an idea of what its like behind the badge. Most have access to a simulator with different shoot/ no shoot scenarios on it. Give it a try and see if it changes your outlook a bit.
Are you willing to die for your paycheck? No they are not. But sad to say, it looks like thats where we're headed.

I have already been trained in this manner, except we used real people and simmunition. I'm retired so i don't keep up with my practice every day. (My sustained injuries do not allow for it.)
Yes it can be difficult, that's why you practice every day. I "killed" an innocent person my first time. But i got better. I'm not saying mistakes won't be made. However there have been far too many for a "properly trained" police force.
But cops aren't criminals, and violence begets more violence and it turns into a vicious circle.

To be fair, cops aren't civilians, so I'd hope civilians are not even close to as good at these situations than a cop.

Lets face it you have a bias against cops not all cops are bad just as not all soldiers are mad killers taking body parts for trophies but what you are doing is paint a broad stroke over all cops, maybe you had a bad experience or family member who cares . As you know the same is said about your fellow soldiers so be careful
Yes it can be said about my fellow soldiers, but what my fellow soldiers aren't doing is killing their fellow countrymen, in an area that isn't a war zone, where cops aren't being blown up, shot by trained snipers, having rockets and mortars fired at them, etc etc. If you are comparing the United states to an over decade long war, then the US is in trouble.

Come on, man. Stop acting like police are killing innocent citizens on every U.S. street corner.
This year there have been 385 fatal police shootings in the U.S, a nation of over 350 million people. If you spread out that number over the states evenly, that is just 8 per state. Now, how many contacts are there between the police and criminals in any given day, week, month or year? How many of those contacts involve a felony? How many of those involved an armed man/woman? How many were responding to a violent crime? The media is making this out to be an issue. The real issue is the amount of dirtbag criminals in our country.
Instead of wasting energy criticizing police who are trying to protect our communities maybe we should take a look at why we, the U.S. have the highest number of crimes in the world annually, the highest rate of illegal drug use and the highest amount of incarcerations by about a million miles.

I'm not acting like they are killing people on every street corner. What I'm acting like is the police are progressively getting more and more aggressive with everyone and the for profit prison system is just fueling it.
I was exaggerating your argument to ignite a debate. The for-profit prison system is an unrelated topic. I just don't see how police fatalities are a big issue...like at all. Cases of police violence aren't some epidemic. There have been instances of misuse of force and in those cases, those individual officers go through the same judicial process, upon findings of wrongdoing, after an internal investigation.
Some do, some aren't.
