Lukewarm Carl @Willthiswork fuck yo rainbows

There's a bar in Kentucky that makes smoked old fashioned cocktails and they present them in a Booker's case. They put the cocktail in the case, fill the case with smoke, put the glass on it and then bring it out to you. You pull the glass up, the smoke pours out and you remove the cocktail.

Garrisons brows cowboy bourbon comes in a wooden case as well blood oath. There are actual bars that are specifically old fashioned bars. They serve most of their cocktails with your choice of smoke/wood.
I know it exists. I don't doubt that.

But I rainbow the hell out of their existence.

Just give me good whisky and leave the smoke to Cris Angel and David Copperfield.

And Booker's is too hot for my liking. That 115/116 proof point is my sweet spot. Tons of flavor and oil but not so hot that it feels like you're drinking pure fire.

So by the time I add a few drops of water to Booker's to get it to a good point I find that it's not that great. Plus the water makes it even more spiky at first.

I'm at a loss what to do with it. It's too potent to be enjoyable, even in a cocktail

It would probably be good in a legit whiskey sour or kentucky mule. Cocktails with other strong flavors but it may be too domineering even for those.
I've tried an ol fashioned and a blackberry smash. The liquor just over powers everything else. I mean it tastes okay but it feels like your drinking it straight.
I'll try a sour next time I break it out

I think the richness of the mouth feel from the egg white could help to tone it down and balance it out.

Or I could be wrong because that shit is like tasty gasoline.

I struggle to enjoy most barrel strength juices these days. Although Wild Turkey’s Rare Breed is pretty drinkable and good. You tried that one recently I think?
Like Lukewarm Carl @Willthiswork said, adding water isn’t always a good remedy. It’s not around all that often even though that distillery is close, but I could have grabbed a bottle of that Garrison Cowboy last month. But it was like $200 or something. Their single barrel is pretty solid though. Garrison is about the only TX bourbon I actually like.

Have you guys seen this one before? Got this as a gift from my bro for Christmas. Really god damn good. Rye whiskey is growing on me, although I’m a little picky. I don’t think it’s available here, but my bro grabbed it in Connecticut. F09C8960-F798-449F-AE63-E92D67D06C8E.jpeg

Regarding this^^^

I will add that this is about the only bottle from High West that I like. And it’s really tasty. When I read about it, it says it’s a blend of 6- and 16-year rye whiskeys. It’s a bit pricy, but worth it if you ever see it. Usually a limited release around the holidays.

other than this one, don’t waste your money on High West IMO

Rye whiskey is extremely hit or miss. Most around here think Crown or weisers are the golden standards.

Penderton makes some good rye I'd also recommend Collingwood or lot 40

I haven’t tried Penderton, collingwood, or lot 40. Good to know. And I agree, it’s hit or miss for me. But man, when done right it’s tasty.

willett makes an incredible rye, this is my gold standard and what got me into rye. Harder to find these days, but it’s awesome.

Grateful Dude @Grateful Dude made some blackberry syrup for bourbon blackberry smash cocktails. I was buying syrup from the italian market, but it wasn't cheap and was really sweet.
2oz bourbon or rye
1oz BlackBerry syrup
1/2oz lime juice
Shaken in ice and strain

Delish!

While I’m in here....I also want to reiterate that the Midwinters Night Dram rye (I posted it above not long ago) has been a real pleasure to sip on lately.

buy it if you can ever find it.

2 cups blackberries 2cups water.
Low simmer, muddle em up for about 10 min. Strain berries and back into pot to simmer add cup of sugar, recipe calls for equal parts water and sugar. I prefer on the less sweet side. Once sugar is dissolved bottle up.
Keeps for about a week in the fridge, I froze some.

Made a soda with it this afternoon. Will try a cocktail tonight!

Grabbed a bottle of rye to test out. Like we’ve said in here, rye is hit or miss for me. We’ll see how it is!

Just FYI:

This Dowling Bros is fine, but nothing to be excited about.I had a couple of small glasses earlier. I don’t dislike it like some other ryes I’ve tried, it’s pretty easy to drink at 80 proof, and I think it matches it’s price point ($33). But nothing really stands out about it. I think it may do well in a cocktail but I haven’t gone there yet.

I won’t have any issue finishing the bottle, but not sure it’s one I’d go out of my way to buy again. Definitely had worse rye than this.

Rye disappoints me more often than not.
