Russians are also really good at hacking and have been mapping out under sea information, cables and pipelines for years with at least one episode of cutting one anonymously that was almost assuredly them.
Long before nuclear war, the rapid advance of things like drones and hacking infrastructure sets them as near peers far more than a conventional weaponry might suggest.
I think most of this just highlights the huge gap between blowing stuff up, causing trouble, and then actually projecting force in terms of boots on the ground.

Geographically it’s easier terrain, mostly steppe land with some ridges. Closer to the Russian heartland so easier to supply. But I think the urban centres will be very hard to occupy, we might see Kiev turn into Sarajevo. But like I said, Putin is probably hesirant to destroy Odessa and Kiev.
I don’t know if they’ll be AS tough as the Afghans, but the populace is no pushover and many that had pro Russian sentiments have changed their mind now that their families are cowering in subways according to my cousin.
I think there's a few nervous people in Virginia and Washington cheering for Russia to succeed.
If Russia can't even beat Russia Junior, these massive employment programs/scams/money pits get that little bit harder to justify.
Sure they can always say 'Ooga booga, General Secretary Pooh has a shiny new plane' but I just can't see the American public ever being afraid of tech with a 'Made in China' sticker slapped on it.
