You respect the Muslims who are happy to ignore the vast majority of their religion's instructions because of how violent and barbaric and vile they are, you mean.

Personally, I don't respect "moderate" Muslims, because you cannot be a "moderate" Muslim. Either the Koran and the hadith's claims are true and legitimate, or they are not. Either you believe that Muhammed's flying horsepeacockwoman was a real thing, or you are saying that the Koran is lying, and Islam is VERY clear on what the punishment for that stance is.

"Chill" Muslims need to wake the fuck up and demand that their faith moves out of the 14th Century. But of course, according to its foundational texts, it can never do that because it can never be altered or changed by humans. So it's just going to be an anchor on humanity for the next several centuries.

How many Muslims do you know well and interact with on a frequent basis?

I used to play cricket with two Afghanis, they'll be at my engagement party in a couple of months. They're good sorts.

I have a Muslim colleague who I get on well with (he's a cricket nut so that's an easy cultural connection, plus I love Bangladeshi food) and another who has never said more than six words at a time to me or any other male in the office. The cricket nut will party it up at my house with me. The other one is invited but won't show up, because I'm a male and she's a woman and Islam is pure shit like that. She wouldn't go to any male colleague's engagement party or wedding.

And I and my colleagues had some face-to-face and continuing interactions with the local Islamic community after the mosque massacres. But I'm not gonna talk openly about that.

How do you reconcile them being good sorts, with you also not respecting moderate Muslims?

I respect them as people.

I don't respect their religion or their inability to turn their backs on it. (Though their families would immediately disown them and cut off all contact if they did, of course.)

They actually don't want to be Islamists, they want to be Westerners. There is a Muslim community team in the city's social cricket league, they chose not to join it because they wanted to socialise with the locals and not be insular and clannish. But their culture is so deeply tied into their religion, that they literally cannot renounce it without losing their entire family and community.

Our wicketkeeper's wife used to watch every game wearing a singlet with her tits hanging out, they avoided her because it made them uncomfortable. But they never talked shit or were rude to her.

They are good guys. But they struggle with their religion, because of how primitive, sexist and violent it is. Are you going to pretend that it isn't? Do you want your daughter or niece (I have no idea if you have kids) to grow up under ANY form of Islamic law?

Yes, I don't have much time or respect for fundamentalist religious types of any stripe. Religious fundamentalism kills critical thinking and intellectual honesty.

I don't respect that any more then I have respect for 35 year olds who still believe in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus because they want them to be real.

But none of this is relevant to the thread topic, anyway.

What a surprise.

I give you the respect of answering your question honestly, and clarifying my stance for you.

You respond with a two-line snarky post where you address exactly nothing of what I said (or even attempt to), put up a lame trolling non-response, and then run like a bitch rather than even attempt to answer the simple, on-topic question that I asked you. Because you know that you can't answer it honestly. So you'll just throw a little passive-aggressive hissy fit, and now there's no conversation to be had.

What a bitch.

If you're not willing to engage in dialogue then just shut the fuck up, eh?

John Lee Pettimore @John Lee Pettimore is almost done with his book "Everything I Needed to Know About Islam I Learned From Two Guys Who Don't Like Islam".

can't wait. :)
Actually had quite a bit of interaction with the local Islamic community following a horrific tragedy that you probably heard about.

Are you going to tell me that Islam in fact ISN'T primitive, sexist and barbaric? And outline exactly how you arrived at that stance?

Nope, you're not.

sure. I think that it's easy to understand the religious texts of Islam in a way that's not calling for the literal murder and subjugation of all non-believers. In fact, I think it's a corruption of the faith to interpret the religious texts in such a way.

EDIT - deployed to Saudi Arabia for 3 months in 1999. Traveled around the region with a cultural attaché and met lots and lots of people.

How about you tell us which book did you read about Islam, or wait did you see it on Tv?

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Interpret that in a way that is not vile and barbaric.

Or tell me that Sahih al-Bukhari is not real Islam.

Or tell me that the source I linked to is un-Islamic.

John Lee Pettimore @John Lee Pettimore

Sky’s protection
The sky protects the earth from the lethal rays of the sun. If the sky did not exist then the sun’s radiation
would have killed off all life on earth. It also acts like a blanket wrapped around the earth, to protect it
from the freezing cold of space. The temperature just above the sky is approximately -270oC. If this
temperature was to reach earth then the planet would freeze over instantly. The sky also protects life
on earth by warming the surface through heat retention.
“We made the sky a protective ceiling. And yet they are turning away from Our signs!” (Quran 21:32)

How do you call it primitive ?
