What do you even do?
Very niche environmental consulting firm. I’m a geologist and biologist. We study and help regulate the local aquifer, which also happens to contain a bunch of endangered species in the caves and groundwater springs (there are lots of caves and springs here). Projects range from private development of open ranchland to big roadway or infrastructure projects. I’m a state licensed professional geoscientist, and also federally permitted for about 20 different endangered species.

Yes sir, here in Austin. Although our effective work area ranges from Ft. Hood (1.5 hour north of town) to San Antonio (an hour south south). Basically the central texas IH-35 growth corridor that passes through the Edwards Aquifer region.

Does your kid have calluses?
Fortnite is hardcore.

No, he doesn’t. I want him to be a kid while he still can. I was cooking dinner, doing laundry, lots of other chores, when I was his age. It sucked. My mom would call me out of my room to come to the kitchen where she was sitting to make her tea or let the dog out the door right next to her. I don’t want to be that parent.

My sister has actually been busier during COVID. She does a lot of private consulting and stuff, though, and her biggest client bought quite a few properties last year. She’s also the only geologist in her state with some certifications I can’t remember right now

Do you have a company chopper that I can use to commute?

My kid is spoiled. He has chores, but not that much manual labor. He’s doing really well in school, so I’m not gonna complain. I told him to keep that going. I want him to be successful in life, opposite of me.
Fuck that, my little man better do good in school and bust his ass.

He got his first shovel before he was one and graduated to the 1 year old room in daycare early. So he's on the right track.

We started our firm in 2014 (after peeling away from a bigger Corp) and last year was easily our best year. I have never been busier in my life. Which is good, but I was also frequently at the brink of insanity. 2020 was not my best mental health year, but it was the best year for my bank account. This year seems to be moving forward at a good pace already. My wife got laid off last year because Covid, so I was happy to have steady income for our family through all of last years bullshit.

She’s so much happier to be running her own business versus working for a bigger corporation. I am hoping she’ll find a job for little ol’ me somewhere in the near future. I am getting my real estate license here and I’ll probably take the test there because it could come in handy with her clients.

My son helps with the garden and stuff, but I’m not making him mow the lawn or clean the gutters.

There are a lot of things that I enjoy better working for myself rather than at a big company. It hasn’t been without its headaches as there is a lot of extra shot I’ve had to deal with. But no doubt it was the right move for me. For about 10 years I was lining someone else pockets. Fuck that.

"we are working on our irrigation system"
Yeah. The lawn maintenance company does all that.

Also. I live with the HOA president so that’s not gonna work. Jewish guilt sucks.

That’s exactly it. She has a lot of headaches but she can navigate them as she sees fit. She actually needs another geologist but the one she wanted to hire couldn’t take the position.
